July 29, 2009: New Red Light Cameras Go Live In Sacramento − As reported by Matthew Keys FOX40 News
SACRAMENTO - Authorities want you to be aware of two new red-light cameras recently installed on Sacramento roadways.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department report the new red-light cameras, both located on Madison Avenue, have been installed at Date Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard and will be activated Thursday.
Red light cameras are typically installed by police departments to deter speeding through intersections after a traffic light turns yellow. Cameras are also installed at "trouble intersections" where auto accidents resulting from red light violations occur.
"Increased traffic safety is the number one priority of the county's Red Light Photo Enforcement Program," Sacramento County Sheriff's Tim Curran wrote in a press release issued today.
According to Curran, red light cameras are praised for a 76% reduction in auto accidents at intersections where cameras are installed. Overall, the county has seen a 28% reduction in red light accidents at all intersections controlled by a traffic light, whether the intersection has a camera or not.
California Law states all intersections that have red light cameras must place visible signs alerting drivers to the presence of such cameras.

California City Spends Thousands to Defend Red Light Camera Ticket
As reported by TheNewspaper.com on 07/27/09: Fullerton, California spends $14,000 to convince a judge to overturn his own red light camera decision.
Fullerton, California believes its right to due process was deprived during a red light camera trial last year, and now the city is spending thousands in an attempt to overturn the judge's ruling. On Thursday, the Orange County Superior Court's Appellate Division is scheduled to hear a motion that would, in effect, put a motorist who walked away with a court dismissal nine months ago back on trial for the exact same offense. Fullerton's complaint is that Presiding Judge Robert J. Moss decided the case in November without input from the city attorney.
"The appellate proceedings were thus a sham and not representative of justice or a proper adversarial search for truth and the rule of law, as to the issues purportedly decided on appeal," the city's brief, addressed to Judge Moss, stated. "The city of Fullerton respectfully moves this court to immediately... order that the superior court rescind its order dismissing the citation and dismissing the guilty count in this matter."
